BOPF (Tea Bags) & F.B.O.P.                 .
Nuwara Eliya.
6,000 + ft.

Close to Mahagastotte but with some colour to the liquor.

Situated on the Eastern edge of the Nuwara Eliya District. The estate is on the edge of the high Nuwara Eliya peak escarpment and the area slopes away and down into the next famous district of Uva, both are known for high flavoury teas. It therefore has the advantage of being exposed to the hot drying Cachan wind which sweeps in from the East up through the Uva slopes. The estate is situated on the edge of this famous hill resort (Nuwara Eliya), often called ' Little England' and overlooking the lower Uva District to the South and East, sloping away down to the coast.

The area is renowned as a champagne tea district. The estate is recorded in 1875 as in the ownership of a Dr. Duke and to be 167 acres but 100 acres in cultivation and this 100 acres was in Cinchona. The bark was stripped to give the extract Quinine used to great effect against Malaria.

The name was derived from Peru where the mythical Countess of Cinchon had been cured of Malaria. It was grown in India and Java in quantity. John Eliot Howard, the quinologist, reported the Cinchona from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to be superior to elsewhere in the world. We have to remember by 1870 coffee was under attack by disease (Hemileia Vastatrix) and by 1875 coffee was disappearing from the scene, Cinchona was a crop that planters turned to in desperation and it was successful but tea was to take over totally and Cinchona had all but disappeared by 1890 from the plantations.
