UVA

Situated in the lower Uva area. The District is famous for the variety of birds and tour parties go to this area to bird watch. The gardens were created for scientific work originally but are in fact beautiful for tourists to visit and create an air of romance, with ornamental creeks, trickling streams from the mountain tops above, the garden is situated at about 5,400 ft and the mountains form a backdrop rising steeply from the gardens a further 1,400 ft behind. There is a huge array of native ferns and the blazing red flame tree covered in cream-blossomed creepers. Parasitic orchids on the many trees and native tree ferns, a hundred types of roses to make the British at home and the genuine English Oak tree. In the lowlands beneath spreading to the sea at Hambantota ( a tourist area for underwater observation of fish and coral) which once held large numbers of wild elephants causing considerable damage to village crops, bear, porcupines. and many leopard roamed here but are now rarely seen.
