Island
status in Bio culture:
This island was very quick to see that there were benefits in reducing and indeed eliminating chemical sprays were possible. This policy was born from a bad attack on the bushes in spite of spraying from a particular worm infestation on the leaves. The solution proved to be manual removal of worms and the stopping of spraying.
For some30 years now the island has had a general policy of encouraging Bio
culture in
the
whole tea industry. That operates to-day with the benefit of those 30 years
of Bio diversity build-up. Thus the use of sprays is by special licence after
the Te Research Station (T.R.I.) has first inspected the attack and evaluated
the severity of it.
This policy has led to the I.S.O. organisation declaring that Ceylon teas are the cleanest teas in the world for chemical residues which were not detected.
